Sunday morning at the beach

It was so hot over the weekend, there was nowhere else to be but on the beach. And so we all (two little nephews, a brother, sister and brother-in-law, and a husband) paid a visit to the sand and surf. I couldn't have asked for a better Sunday morning!

I'm probably behind the times, but this is a great idea from homelife - books facing forward on a shelf! Kids books especially have some very cool artwork that often gets lost. What a lovely way to brighten a wall!

I think this is something that could definitely work in any room - I have so many books I want to show off. Mental note already taken for future house interior type decorating activities.

My sister and her family are about to head off to live in New Brunswick, Canada - hence the accumulation of all things Aussie - including the pictured Akubra. She's also started a blog called Snowballs and Lamingtons which I'm looking forward to reading. Not looking forward to them leaving though. *sigh*

I couldn't resist these gorgeous Country Girl bloomers made by Wild Things of Noosa. How cute would these look on any little girl you know? I have a brand new niece (5 weeks old) and although she is way too small now, in about 18 months I can just see her waddling around all ruffled up in bloomers like these. *Insert doting Aunty look here*

Tra la la - Kondalilla Falls

Last weekend we went for a bushwalk and discovered the Kondalilla Falls in the Sunshine Coast's hinterland. It is such a lovely place.

Next time we go back, I'm definitely taking a picnic lunch...

A couple of days ago I visited the Chopping Block cafe in Buderim (Sunshine Coast, Queensland) and was served up this fabulous Chai latte. I'm sure you understand why I couldn't resist taking a photo. My hot drink experience was delicious, made on real Chai tea (not syrup) and I'm already planning my next trip back. Nice one Buderim!

I heart wellington boots

There's a great big cyclone (called Yasi) headed for the North Queensland Coast - and he looks a little scary!

After talking to my Aunt in Townsville (which is right in the path of the storm) this morning, I was thinking that a lot of people would probably do well to invest in a pair of wellington boots.

Actually we are all a little on the rainy side this summer in Queensland so I could do with a pair myself! Check out this gorgeous selection - I'm a little in love.

Love this keyboard note idea from Little Dot. How often when you are sitting at the computer do you think of something that has to be done and then forget to write it down?

Queensland floods

Well for Queenslanders last week was a little crazy, with more than 75% of us affected by floods. We were very lucky and weren't inundated like some people, but we are thinking of those who are going to have to rebuild their lives with everything swept away or covered in stinking mud.

It's been so wonderful to see how people are pitching in to help, whether it's donating money, volounteering time to help clean up, or running appeals to raise funds (like the BrisStyle handmade ark appeal, the Wild Things of Noosa hand made auction and the Australian Disaster Relief Shop on Etsy).

Our thoughts are with you Queensland on this long road to recovery.

Any creative new year resolutions?

As a new year resolution (made today in fact) I've decided that I'm going to learn how to screen print.

And then I'll spend the rest of the year working on my technique (on textiles and paper) and hopefully making very cool things like these birdy cushions by Justine Ellis as found on Print & Pattern.

I'll post my progress here..and with you as witnesses I'm sure to stick to it...right? What are you doing creatively this year?

A red bird at Christmas

When I first moved to America, I remember going for a walk just after Christmas time, and saw this fiery red flash of colour fly by me on the dreary grey day. I actually managed to get a few pictures, but nothing close up so I could see what type of bird this was. I hadn't really thought about that day until now, when I was searching for my book-club's book for December to download on my kindle. There on the front cover was the red bird - a Cardinal!

As I was searching through Etsy for some gift ideas just now, I came across this beautiful painitng by lauracarter. It looks just like I remember that day, the red berries, and this beautiful red bird!!

Back to Christmas basics

Remember home made Christmas decorations? You know the ones you used to make at school or on the weekend using foil, glitter (lots of glitter), gold and silver pens, cotton wool, and I'm sure toilet rolls made an appearance. Very messy but very fun!

Paper chains were my speciality and we used to make them as loooong as possible and string them all over the house. Highly festive for us and I'm sure mum was happy it kept holiday crazed children busy for hours at a time.

I found a great story on Apartment Therapy about nearly 'no-cost' Christmas decorations including paper chains (see above photo) and cut out paper snowflakes (I so remember making those!). It's definitely worth wandering over to the website to have a look.

It's December! And in this part of the world it is supposed to be summer today. A look out the window shows rain and gloomy skies, I could be anywhere in Europe (although it is apparently knee deep in ice and snow at the moment, so not really). Where's the sun? I even had slippers on at one stage this morning!

No matter - today is the day to bring out those advent calenders. I LOVE these and always try to have one on the go. Although I rarely start them on time and usually end up with discounted ones halfway through December. This is fine with me as the result is generally one big chocolate feast to make up for all the days I've missed.

Now if I was super organised (and this will be a goal for future Christmas's) I would make sure I had one of these fabulous advent calenders that Babble.com very kindly brought to my attention. I am so in love with the Pottery Barn advent calendar. It couldn't be too hard to make...could it?

Hallelujah! I've discovered Mother Maria - a boutique eco clothing range by Australian designer Katie Gannon inspired by op shopping, vintage magazines, and retro patterns. And the best thing is that she is based in my home town although her clothes are stocked all around Australia.

I discovered her gorgeous little shopfront just the other day. Which is a bit slack on my behalf - obviously I haven't walked in my local little township for a while!

In addition to the Mother Maria clothing range the shop is full of all sorts of locally made delights. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in my neck of the woods, in fact I'm going today and propose to indulge in a little bit of retail therapy.

Etsy and Olive Oil...

A few weeks ago, I was out shopping with a friend and we discovered this store called Oil and Vinegar. The week after, my husband and I went to check it out together to sample and choose some dips and oils. We both love the simplicity of dipping fresh bread into some tasty olive oil, with or without additions like dukka. We tried quite a variety of flavours, and purchased some rosemary cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, and it has been absolutely delicious with some crusty sour dough bread!

I love this hand painted oil bottle by Yevgenia on Etsy with the pretty red cyclamen. I like this as a different way to use the olive oil!

Another lovely item from Yevgenia is this ceramic tea or coffee cup which is a great ecofriendly way to have your morning cuppa!

Anyway, I hope you are all having a great day! I have the afternoon off from work, so I'm off to enjoy a cuppa tea outside in this beautiful crisp weather, cook a vegetarian curry for tea, and snack on fresh bread and my rosemary olive oil! Mmmm! :)

I've always been very conservative with my nail polish colours - baby pink or a deeper pink are my two staples.

Drumroll please......Today I am wearing sparkly Turquoise!

My inspiration for throwing nail polish conservatism out the window was due to these very very pretty new summer colours from OPI nailcare. My toes simply won't know themselves as I spend summer painting them in these jewel-like hues!

I also think that OPI's promo signage is very fresh with the butterflies and flowers and I love the names for the different polishes. Don't you?

Inspired by this photograph, taken by Narinuk (one of my favourite photographers from flickr), I have been on a bike obsession for the last few months! My husband and I bought some bikes a little while ago, and have been loving exploring the city in which we live by bike! There is nothing like feeling the wind in your face as your soar down (and sometimes struggle up) hills, hearing the birdies chirp and spending quality time with each other outdoors!

Have you seen the "Babies" Documentary? It is amazing - I wont say too much about it, as not to spoilt it for you if you haven't seen it. One of my sisters-in-law saw it at the movies a few months ago and told me about it, and ever since then I've been waiting for it to come out on DVD.
I watched it today and really enjoyed the story! All I shall say is definitely check it out, and let me know what you thought when you have seen it. After you watch it, you can meet the parents here and hear their reactions to the film and on the other babies from three the different cultures.

Oh, and my favourite baby hands-down was from Bayarjargal from Mongolia! He was so happy, content, playful and mischievous, wasn't he? Who was yours?

Less than a month to go for Spring in Australia to start! Growing up, when the 1st of September came around, I know I would get so excited knowing our summer holidays were coming up which meant trips to the beach, and a hot Christmas! And how about those Myer adds for their Spring/Summer collections? That's when you know that the warmer weather is just around the corner!

I received my weekly "Myer One" email, and checked out their website and saw their new TV commercial for the Spring/Summer 2010/11! ...(Apart from a terrible wave of homesickness) I felt really excited for my family and friends knowing the beautiful weather and holiday fun in store for them! Funny, growing up, I use to think everyone had a birthday calendar in a part of their house, until one day my husband asked if it was "just a dutch thing" - and after discussions with my Mutti, Omey and a few friends, I realised it most definitely was! I think it's a lovely idea having a calendar to remember everyone's birthdays, one that you can use year after year. It is always so lovely sending and receiving birthday cards, isn't it?

The amazing art of Ron Mueck

On the weekend we went to the Queensland Gallery of Modern Art to see the Ron Mueck exhibition. The line up was long, the crowds were huge, but it was entirely worth the effort! Mueck's sculptures are amazingly lifelike and designed on a scale (large and small) that give you no choice but to look twice. It is incredible the way he is able to capture the intricacies of our human bodies (the hair is amazing) as well as our emotions.

I love the way this photo (below) captures the image of the young boy standing so still with everyone moving around him.
I felt that this 'giant' man could stand up at any moment and walk away. He looked so uncomfortable being where he was. If you ever get the chance, make the effort to see a Ron Mueck exhibtion.

Growing up, I remember one of my brothers had a small bottle like this with the coloured sands of Fraser Island. I'd like to think that little bottle had a grain of sand for every smile, adventure and starry night we spent there as a family each year. Certainly those are magical thoughts, much like the magical landscape that this snippet of life was taken from.

I heart cookbooks

While I think the days of the ole "day-to-day cookery book" are not completely gone, I now find myself pouring over cookbooks with amazing recipes and equally incredible food photography. Some of my favourite include the Jamie Oliver cookbooks - just looking at those pictures truly inspire me to bake my heart out!

My latest cookbook that I am loving is "The Newlywed Kitchen" (pictured above) by Lorna Yee and Ali Basye. My favourite food blog (found by Amy - thanks!) Tartelette recommended this cookbook, and tried one of the recipes that turned out perfectly and looked absolutely irresistible!
In this book, they have a wonderful, eclectic collection of recipes for the couple who enjoy cooking together! My husband and I are always looking for ways to spend quality time together, and we are thoroughly enjoying this new outlet!

What is your current favourite cookbook? Any suggestions?

Teacups in print

Well you may or may not have guessed that we are a little obsessed with tea cups, teapots and anything tea related on this blog, so when I saw this teacup linocut print on bluecaravan.net by Ruby Victoria Letterpress you will understand that I got a little excited.

In high school, I remember learning the linocut printing technique and it can certainly be a challenge. This print has a gorgeous level of detail in the teacups and I just love the colour that Narelle Badalassi (owner of Ruby Victoria Letterpress) has used.

I definitely want this one on my wall - framed in white - don't you think?

Have you been to IKEA lately? For me, it's been about a year and a half, until my husband and I went there last weekend to buy one of these so I can dry these:

IKEA have some really awesome items at the moment! I think I was on a little bit of an "IKEA high" after our shopping experience. With so many ideas for each and every room, I felt completely inspired for a house make-over!

Who would have thought you could buy 65 of these for 99c ? I think this weekend is going to include using these paper baking cups to make a whole bunch of red velvet cupcakes with this cute recipe book:

I was searching through flickr, and discovered this absolutely irresistible photograph taken by the amazingly talented photographer Narinuk, who was able to capture the perfect moment of a child cuddling her precious toy!

Can't you just imagine this lil guy being cuddled up? Elijah the Elephant is VERY cute isn't he? You can find the pattern here. This has been added to my list of crafty things to make.

Crushing on rooftop gardens

Latey I've been seeing a few stories around on houses/apartments that are making more of their space and really focusing on being more environmentally friendly in design and function.

One such home in Toronto, Canada, has caught my eye today on re-nest.com with a fabulous rooftop garden, not to mention its gorgeous interior. Looking at the scene from this window (above), you wouldn't think that the house was smack bang in the middle of suburbia!

Love love love the long bench table attached to the kitchen. I am so inspired and already collecting ideas for my next house.

The elusive cargos

So I've spent the day trawling the shops for a pair of cargos for my trip to New Zealand in August, and I could not find one pair that I love. You'd think that you could get your hands on a pair fairly easily.

But then I got to thinking that a good pair of cargos are probably as elusive as a good pair of jeans. I really don't think there is anything more demoralising than looking for that one perfect pair of jeans... *Sigh*

So I've looked around online and it seems that J Brand's Houlihan skinny cargos are the ones to get with very trendy people such as Gwen Stefani and Jessica Alba loving them. Fabsugar Australia discovered them back in May.

If I could get these in Australia I would happily say that my problem is solved. Any suggestions welcome!

I've just had an amazing massage, followed by a long soak in the bath and am feeling particularly relaxed and luxurious. Although, I've just hopped online and as I'm browsing Whiteport's website (beautiful white themed products) I'm thinking that bathtime could be immeasureably enhanced by wearing this cute bath/shower cap ...

In Melbourne, Australia, located a few blocks from the Yarra River is this incredible vintage haberdashery and homewares store called l'ucello. They have an amazing blog showcasing all their irresistible finds and creations one could pour over for hours.

I am completely drawn to this 'Vintage Sewing Collection' shown in their 'Kokeshi Crush' post.

Even their vintage ribbon is beautifully presented in this lovely collection of 'mint, unused' measuring tapes, threads, French fabrics and buttons.

I actually saw them in person last weekend and these pictures just do not do them justice. They are an exquisite piece of glassware, and one discovery to irresistible to pass up!

I'm spreading some Monday morning cheer with this wildly beautiful antique looking rose bush I found in the Barossa Valley a couple of weeks ago. It was climbing up the end of a row of gnarled old grapevines which are probably older than I am!

This picture completely and utterly captures where I want to be living (beautiful country setting), what I'd love to be doing (be outdoors, have my own chooks to collect eggs from, pick fresh veggies from my own veggie garden) on my mornings/afternoon after work, and enjoy the surroundings on the weekend. Sit out on a porch with a cuppa tea, have lovely family dinners outside... *ahhh* Completely and utterly irresistible!

Ok, I might be showing my age here just a bit, but I remember back in the day where one of the first things I sewed with my Mutti was this floral roper and I just LOVED it! I wore it everywhere, and was so sad when:

1. It went out of fashion (perhaps mine was never in fashion, but as a teen I loved it and felt great!) and
2. I grew out of it.

SO - to my absolute delight, I was looking around on modcloth the other day and lo and behold I discovered a floral romper called "too good to be true"!!

Now I know I could sew something again, but this is WAY to cute to pass up! Perfect for the wonderfully hot summery days that we are having! Now all I need are some cute shoe to go with it - any ideas?

I was inspired by Mama Magpie's twitter page, and decided to google 'twitter backgrounds' to see what I could discover. I found these photos pictured above from social identity.

Personally, I'd love something unique from Anna Raff from her Ornithoblogical collection! I think she'd create the perfect water-colour twitter-themed bird!

I also found Fresh ID that I thought had some really creative ideas. Don't you like being able to customise and personalise things that you use, just to give it that unique spin?

I love this creative idea to use as a message board for around the house, or perhaps to write up a cute little menu for an outdoor dinner party. The options are endless! Definitely on my wish list!

Proud as a peacock

I took this photo outside Maggie Beers' farm shop in the Barossa Valley (South Australia) last week. How beautful is this peacock? I was trying to cajole him in to fanning out his tail (just a little), but he just shook his feathers and stared down at me from his perch on the wall.

I have been on the look-out for several months now for that perfect set of a milk jug and sugar bowl, and was looking at the 'new arrivals' section of Anthropologie and found these two beauties. I love the size, shape, floral pattern and design on these! I also love the fact that they are hand-made in South Africa (shout-out to my dear friend Julie). These are definitely going on my wish list and a hint-hint email to my husband for my birthday (even though it's still a few months away, I'm all for future planning)!

There is also a matching cake plate that would go perfectly for a lovely afternoon tea to serve a freshly baked cake on!

Learning to count

It's a rainy day today and although I'm desperately wanting to be doing something productive on my holiday, I'll admit that I've been lazing around a little. Then I saw this little crafty project from whipup.net. I've got 3 young nephews and immediately thought that this beanbag number set would be great to make for them (the tutorial is here). You could even do this for the alphabet if you were feeling VERY crafty. Now...to get off the couch!
